OVERVIEW
Šentvid pri Ljubljani grammar school wanted to replace the old and extremely energy inefficient lighting system in the gym. The gym is used not only for PE and school events, but is also a venue for sports competitions, with some of them occasionally televised, which calls for stronger illumination. The hall can be divided into three parts with curtains.
The gym is in use about 2,200 hours a year, with the cost of lighting maintenance amounting to €1,000 a year. The investor wanted to replace old metal-halide lamps with a more energy efficient and effective LED system. The installation of luminaries at the height of 13 metres presented a special challenge.
Based on a study on how to cut electricity use as much as possible, the company C&G and its partner Lumenia designed a solution that comprised H LUM LED lights and a smart management system.
SOLUTION
We replaced the 36 existing 400-W reflectors with 32 180-W H LUM lamps with wide optics 010, cutting the system’s input power to a third.
We upgraded the lighting with the DALI smart management system, which supports automatic adjustments of illumination levels based on requirements. The system, designed in collaboration with IKU, supports pre-setting illumination levels on individual buttons (300 lx for PE, 500 lx for matches and 750+ lx for televised matches), and remote management through a mobile app. The app can be used to manage every light individually, or to manage lighting in each of the thirds separately.
The light switch panel makes it possible to switch lights on and off and control the illumination by thirds of the hall, as well as to change the lighting levels between 300 lx, 500 lx or the highest level. Motion sensors ensure that the lights automatically switch off after 30 minutes, if nobody is in the hall. If a sensor detects motion, the lights switch back on to the last used setting.
Most of the time the gym is used for PE, so the basic lighting setting is fixed to 300 lx across the whole hall, and locked for security.
RESULTS
Even though the system’s input power has decreased to a third, the illumination of the hall has increased by 60%. The smart management system brings even more power savings, so the investor will recover the cost of the investment in less than 4 years. The new lighting improved the visibility, as well as the appearance of the hall, providing users with better conditions for their activities, and improving their wellbeing.
One of the main reasons why the client selected our solution is zero maintenance costs during the 5-year warranty period, with the estimated lifespan of the lights at 60,000 hours.
We have used the H LUM LED lights in several similar projects in the past: in Podbočje, Vodice and Radeče, as well as in 5 halls in Karlovac.
